What Happens When Time Breaks?

Project: ECHO

We’re deep in development on a new puzzle-adventure game that’s unlike anything we’ve attempted before. It’s experimental. It's ambitious. And yes, it bends the rules of time in ways we’ve never seen done quite like this.

At its core, this game is about consequences, not just the kind that unfold in the future, but the kind that echo backward. What if cause and effect weren’t so linear? What if your past self could help your present self escape an impossible room… or trap you in it forever?

Our protagonist, unnamed for now, wakes to find the world has… slipped. Time doesn’t flow the way it used to. Whole sections of the environment blink between states, memories don’t align, and what was isn't always what will be. Yet within the chaos, there's an opportunity: to experiment, to observe, to understand.

This is not a time travel story in the traditional sense. There’s no hopping into a machine and punching in coordinates. Instead, we’re exploring the texture of time, the folds, loops, and inconsistencies that make it feel alive.

From a design perspective, we're pushing ourselves to rethink how puzzles can work when time isn't fixed. We’ve prototyped systems where your past actions replay and interact with your present decisions, where the environment ages or rejuvenates based on your input, and where a single moment, anchored properly, can become your greatest tool or your worst enemy.

We’re calling it “Project Echo” for now.

It’s still early, but the pieces are clicking into place, both literally and metaphorically. We’ll share more as the game evolves, but for now, we’ll leave you with a question:

If you could rewind a mistake, would you still be the one who made it?

Stay curious.

I found an Unreal Engine maze generation tutorial that would work fantastic for DungeonQuest. The only problem is it's a total train wreck for beginners to blueprint. It's called Random Maze Generator and you can find it at this site. It's taken me hours just to get to the end of page 5. And it's 14 pages long. Wow. I've decided to put together a beginners tutorial so someone new can follow along and get through this. When I'm done with the series, I'll post a link on the Unreal forum so anyone else searching can find help. The last posts on this were from 2014 and not much help. When done, I will delete this preview.

Whether you're a solo indie developer or part of a larger game studio, one tool remains essential for success: the Game Design Document (GDD). It can mean the difference between a chaotic project and a well-executed game.
